Waiting to see what happens with Brexitt to see if I can rule in or out my first choice destination of Spain. So if the free medical help is taken away I’d say Bulgaria might become favourite for the cheaper cost of living and hopefully medical care. I know it will vary a bit for differant ages / illnesses etc but a general idea per month/annum . Can you pay per household or per person ?

Thanks seedy . Is that BGN 2000 per person or household? I take it that’s an annual price?

Spanish healthcare depends on three things, whether
A) You are working and pay via the tax system.
B) State retirement age, the UK government pay, for now anyway.
C) Neither of the above then private health insurance and its expensive and NO medication is included. Being ill in Spain will hit your pocket harder than you think and residency requires this.

Cheers Tony. Also just incase my son decided to come to Bulgaria does anyone know the cost of insulin? He’s type one diabetic and obviously gets it free here, so I’ve no idea how cheap or expensive insulin is.

I can answer that one.

Register with the Bulgarian health insurance fund and pay 20 lev a a month. Then register with a doctor. They will send you to see a specialist and they will send you back to your new doctor with paperwork. You will have to buy the book (3 leva) and get the medication written down in it by your doctor. This will just be the insulin at first. Then you need the book stamping by the local health insurance office again. Then you can collect a month's supply of insulin per month free. After 3 months you qualify to get all the other paraphernalia e.g. test strips written in the book which will need stamping again but it'll be free. That is the proper way as we've just done it.

So the short answer is do it properly and its free!

In Spain it is NOT free you must pay full commercial rates and its expensive!

Thanks once again Tony. Do you know if it was the same before Bulgaria joined the EU ? Do you think it will change after the nightmare of Brexitt?

That's two good questions. I'm not sure I'd look at the past as a guide to the future but I don't know about pre EU, but post Brexit? Who knows. My feeling is that little will really change for those already here, but it will become more onerous for later arrivals.
