i think it's a pat on the back to suggest that Greece has climbed a rung up the ladder of recovery, even if the figures speak otherwise, so can now borrow more debt on the international market to mortgage it's future offer hope and prosperity to its citizens.

If Tsippy had any sense - which, being a Commie, he hasn't - he'd indeed take the opportunity to mortgage the family silver and then just Welsh on the deal. It's almost certainly too late to bring down the euro - he blinked first a couple if years ago - but it's probably his only chance of being re-elected and, more importantly, preventing the ND thieves from getting their sticky fingers back in the till....

It reminds me of a little doggerel verse that I believe was popular during the German (and - say it quietly - Bulgarian Wink ) Occupation of Greece; if I remember correctly it went something like this:

"Από τότε που ήρθανε οι Botten όλο μας έγινε Verboten, τα ψωμόκια μας Boboten, τα κορίτσια μας Cocotten..." Cool

Not just lazy but a Barbarian* to boot! Cool

*"from the Greek: βάρβαρος , which originates from the languages of early Anatolian nations that were heard by the Greeks as "bar... bar..." In Ancient Greece, the Greeks used the term towards those who didn't speak Greek and follow classical Greek customs. In the early modern period and later, the Greeks used it for the Turks, in a clearly pejorative manner."

Pejorative? Surely not!

"...μὴ μᾶς τὴν πάρουν τὰ σκυλιὰ καὶ μᾶς τὴ μαγαρίσουν.." Wink

Are you describing me ? Laughing Laughing That's very interesting to hear. I love history and the link with past language and now "bar bar" .
For those of us non Greek speakers, we'd gladly hear more....

Tricky one that: if someone qualifies as a "barbarian", would they be equipped to understand the topic, as by definition it would be in Ancient Greek... Wink

PS Most "Modern" Greeks would struggle also, especially since Katharevousa and the polytonic system were abandoned in the interests of allowing la canaille to think they were understanding university lectures, "decent" newspapers and the lies told them by politicians of all stripes. Cool

What say you, Mr S? Wink

Very true, even the language has been abused in Greece.

It's all Greek to me!

But it seems to be a universal affliction as one only has to listen to the news on the BBC and wonder, what country do they think we are in ???
Apparently there is a room full of experts at the Beeb who decide how words are pronounced (who do they think the audience is?) and one can't help wondering where do these 'experts' live Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Tony, I think the room-full of "experts" has now been retired and replaced by a cage-full of monkeys.

Auntie decided to swing to the Left a long time ago and is now one of those PC organisations* where people have the "right" to garble the wonderful English language in any way which chimes with the supposed listeners. One can only surmise that these are speakers of various unintelligible dialects, whose grasp of what used to pass for the Queen's English is not so much tenuous as completely non-existent.

Unfortunately, lexicographers are of no help in the matter these days, due to the "language belongs to the people and mangling it is legitimate linguistic evolution" claptrap that is so prevalent in Broken Britain. Nowadays, one can "identify as an English-speaker", which apparently means that whatever dross comes out of your mouth is ipso facto Correct English. It seems that if some dunce can't understand you then it is your fault for not being able to rap** rather than his for being illiterate.

*Of course that doesn't extend to paying equal salaries to the various "stars, such as Chris Evans (who he?) or indeed Claire Balding, who comes at "gender equality" from a somewhat ambivalent direction...

** Disappointingly, "rapping" doesn't mean bringing your Malacca cane*** smartly into contact with his empty bonce.

***Oh, how I love that term! Wink

A 'Malacca cane rap', what a great phrase, it's poetic justice and beautifully hilarious Laughing Laughing

I am envious of the imagination that pictures up that image.
