I have a corrugated asbestos roof on a small area of my property.

Last summer we had a horrific hail storm whic smashed holes in all the rooves. I have fixed all the others and now want to turn my attentions to this one.

I have some more asbestos with which I can patch the roof. I need an adhesive, available in Bulgaria, which will stick asbestos. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I might use?

Are you completely sure you want to repair it? Damage to asbestos roofing can expose the asbestos fibres within and you really don't want to mess with that stuff.

Especially if it's a small area, I'd be inclined to strip it off and replace it with the relatively lightweight plastic roofing tiles, which are pretty much indistinguishable from the terracotta ones...

I would endorse Seedy's sage advice.

I had the misfortune to watch two handymen breaking up old corrugated asbestos roofing and attempting to burn it with some scrub wood on the riverbank alongside a property I'd bought near Krivodol almost 5 years ago! It was in the autumn and the workers were employed by a property agent, so not my direct responsibility, but I could do nothing but hold my head in my hands and comment politely on their folly to the agent.

The land around the property I'd purchased at the riverside was now being polluted by the asbestos micro fibres carried with the smoke into nearby trees, whilst the fire remnants including asbestos fragments (since asbestos is not good fuel) would be washed out from the bank with the spring flood into the river course and deposited further afield!

Having treated sufferers of silicosis and similar lung cancers in the past, I have no illusions as to the painful, debilitating and excruciating ending it brings. Exceedingly unpleasant for the individual even when it hasn't metastasised, worse for family and friends to witness the dry drowning and inevitably emaciated victim.

My advice for what it's worth - suit up, mask up, cover off the area and get professional advice for its permanent removal. If there are holes knocked in sheets then fibres are exposed, and it's likely 25 - 40 years old to have been used at all.

Whilst new and intact there are methods of sealing asbestos products in place and I've been obliged to check relevant signage / safety markings on numerous SHEF inspections within older MOD buildings. Suffice to say, the surfaces of your asbestos sheets are already compromised, and apart from their likely age, the risks increase exponentially.

For reference,

This is a known health risk across Bg and the rates aren't getting smaller, because of the age skewed population affected. They more commonly used the products on an industrial scale post '50s, apart from the subsequent domestic applications into the late 70s.
