Probably a long shot but any pilots on here? If so, what is the general aviation scene like in Bulgaria? Any small airstrips with private aircraft, or does all recreational flying take place at airports?

Cheers, Ivan

There are certainly a few airstrips near Sofia, so I would imagine that there are others dotted about the country.

Here's a list of Bulgarian airports. Click on them individually to find out more. Some are military only, some are the international airports and others, such as the one at Izgrev / Kalimantsi, have private aircraft. The latter type are few but there are certainly some. Also there's a plane that comes and goes near Plovdiv right by the motorway with an airstrip cut into a field. I've seen this used for crop spraying refills but someone told me they will also take plucky punters for a ride... probably in both senses of the phrase! Cool

Thanks Mod,

That's just what I needed. Now I wonder if crop sprayer pilots are in demand?

Not a chance I'm afraid. Have you checked your license is EASA and not the old UK or JAR one?

As far as I could tell, from several years of visiting and fact finding trips, there is no GA scene like there is in the UK. If there are £150 burger clubs I've yet to find them.

There are more qualified Bulgarian pilots than there are jobs and you'd need to speak the language fluently and hold at least a CPL for crop-dusting. I've got an ATPL but I never want to see another airliner again when I retire (hopefully early) but I would be interested in gliding, and there are quite a few of those clubs around if you have the itch to fly.

Just don't expect to get paid for it!

My question about crop spraying jobs was meant tongue-in-cheek, but thanks for your reply.

I have UK an EASA licence and have built and restored vintage aeroplanes. Shame about the lack of GA, but gliding would be a good alternative as that's where I started in the early 80's

Cheers, Ivan

My apologies - it can be hard to tell online!

The snag with GA is that the things that make it expensive in the UK equally apply in Bulgaria - fuel and parts. The qualified engineers might be a bit cheaper but your hourly rate is not going to be much lower. There might be some clubs out there flying the usual mix of 152s/172s/PA-28s et.al. but I didn't didn't find them.

Your skills exceed mine greatly - I would never get into anything I had a hand in building...!
