With very little to do tonight.....as most nights........I was looking through Youtube. In the main I look at old fights.....the Ali era and the great Marvin Hagler. For some reason a few American survivalist sites were thrown up earlier so I thought I,d have a look......always something to learn for a Winter drive in Bulgaria. So, one guy is showing what he has put together for his wifes car......nit just for Winter but to carry all year round. The boot.......or in this case .....the trunk.......was filled to over flowing. I was wondering that on the days the woman is,nt suffering some natural disaster, Russian invasion or a visit from ET where will she put the Walmart groceries for that weekend. ? Then at the end of the video when he has gone through all the items.......and to be fair there was some sensible stuff in there.......he pulls out TWO copies of the New Testament.........one he says for his wife and one for her to give to someone else who may need it. Now, why did,nt I think of that the year I nearly got wiped out travelling through Hungary in January.
The next video I stopped watching after the guy produced as an essential survival item for his " bug out bag"........I must get one of those.......was dental floss. Only an American would think that as the world disintegrates around you, you,ll need to floss your teeth.
Now to get back to some sensible Americans and watch Hagler V Hearns.........for the 37th time. Laughing

I assume you are kidding about the dental floss? It's actually really handy stuff to have in an emergency situation: apart from its normal use it's handy as fishing line, whipping the ends of rope, starting a fire (waxed floss burns much better than wet leaves and other crap people try to use) and, due to its strength, a lot of other things that you'd normally grab some string for.

The normal US "survival kit" is kept just in case every MacD nationwide is obliterated in a sneaky strike by Fat Boy Rocket Man and the production of Oreos and Hershey bars is sabotaged. Very Happy Bibles are certainly useful, of course - especially the ones printed on thin paper...much better than squares cut from the News of the Screws. Wink

PS Dental floss may even be strong enough to garrote 'Er Indoors if rations get on the low side... Wink

I don't go anywhere without my Dental Floss, but I don't feel the need to carry a Bible albeit, I still have my Army issued, ''Soldier's Bible''.

I'll be doing a Winter Vehicle Prep & Carry Kit Video a little later on this year, hopefully. Wink

Don't forget, Mr Wolf: "Beer in the Wolf, diesel in the car"...not like last winter! Wink

Each person knows himself/herself best and I need dental floss for its Primary Usage as due to my dental map, I get bunged up and toothpicks won't shift the debri. If not removed, this will lead to firstly discomfort followed by gum infection and eventually tooth decay so I carry it when out in town and know that I am likely to eat. If I didn't require it for its primary purpose then, I most probably wouldn't include it in a so termed 'survival kit', but its saving grace is that it is extremely light, quite strong and has many uses.

I have been watching a series from the History Channel called ALONE where the last man (also women in season 2) standing, win $500,000 however, most simply cannot handle the solitude and some give up after one night on Vancouver Island which is rain forest, full of Black Bears, Cougars and Wolves. They get to choose 10 survival items in addition to how many clothes they wish and one free Tarpaulin.

Season 2 has a few what I term 'Lard Arses' in it. One a rather obese ex-American serviceman who was full of bravado at home and saying how he had served (probably served bacon n eggs for all I know) in Iraq and Afghanistan and wouldn't quit lasted all of 4 hours before hitting the satellite quit button. My next bet is how long a certain female very obese ex-Services and ex-Police will last. I can usually judge by a person's attitude and sense of humour rather than what Bushcraft and Survival skills a person has, but of course, you're looking for the whole package and how well they adapt to their new surroundings.

It is often said that the Mind is the best survival tool you can have.

I'm not surprised toothpicks won't shift the debris when you get 'bunged up'. Laughing Embarassed
You left yourself wide open for that one. Wink

The show I have enjoyed recently is with Ben Fogle visiting people who have gone to live completely off the beaten track. Some of the places these people have gone to make rural Bulgaria look like Times Sq. And I quite enjoy some of the Alaska programmes......though.....and I mivht have written this before here.......I stopped watching one after finding out that the" wilderness " the family lived in.......fishing and hunting all thier own food, etc,etc .......actually had a supermarket 8 miles away. Kind of took the gloss of it for me. Laughing

Tip from my dentist, don't use floss, there is a much better product called G.U.M. trav-ler. Get it from most good pharmacies or aptika and it wont pull any bridge's or caps out.

Laughing Must be some poor dentistry if floss can pull out any bridge or capping. I'm off for a consultation with an ''implantology specialist'' any week soon, but I have to cut my smoking down..... before, during or after. Wink
