I need a couple of fillings and the cost is 60 lev's each. Not having had anything done before I'm not sure if this is good, bad or simply rip-off. Does anyone have any comparison ? Thanks.

Well, it depends partly on what material you want for the fillings. As I recall, our dentist charges 30-40 leva for a filling with the fancy white gunk; I'd tend to expect, rightly or wrongly, that it'd be somewhat cheaper outside Sofia.

Up to last year (we've not been this year) our dentist charged 20Lv per visit whether for a filling or extraction. Root canal work is 4 visits so 80Lv in total.

No disrespect intended, but I believe that you are of UK Pensionable age and should therefore be in receipt of your S1 and UK issued EHIC?

Now, I am not yet of UK Pensionable age, but pay into the Bulgarian National Health Insurance Fund which does cover some very limited dental treatment, (I think that I can get something like ONE filling per year on my contributions), but the rest has to be paid for. Albeit, for yourself on an S1 (if you have one) then, surely, you would/should get the same as you could expect in the UK?

I recently had a Workaway (Volunteer worker for those that don't know what a Workaway is), who was complaining of a headache and toothache and HIM having no health insurance and not even a EHIC, I took him to my Dentist in Burgas who said that he simply could not refill the cavity, but that root canal treatment was needed and also, that he couldn't do that in one sitting. I am almost sure that his quote was 180Lv. and once I agreed, he started the first phase there and then on the Friday and opened his surgery on both a Saturday and a Sunday to complete the full root canal treatment over three sittings.

Therefore, I think that you might be able to judge a ballpark figure, but the rest of it, for me is, how long is a piece of string.

MW, that is NOT how the S1 works. The S1 entitles someone to the same prices as a Bulgarian pensioner, not what you could expect in the UK but not all Dentists and Doctors sticks to that. There is a topic somewhere on the S1 but I can't be bothered to look for it.

You are not entitled to hold a UK EHIC and S1 simultaneously. The former is for a temporary visit, the latter for residence in the EEA. And, of course, post-Brexit your S1 is likely to be just petchka-fodder and your EHIC just a handy tool for slipping locks... Wink

We are using one near Balchic . The fillings I refer to are on the side not on the top . The charge for a full clean , scale and polish is 80 lvs. Just think its a bit excessive but I really don't know.
