The local neighbourhood seem to be of the opinion that over 70's should not be on their roof sweeping the chimney. All very well but nobody volunteered, besides, the breeze is a little cooling view is good, err, 'the sea view not the pool view love..'

Have you got a set of brushes or did you make some Heath Robinson contraption? I want to do mine and as I have no brushes, no chickens, I thought I might lash a few Blackthorn branches together and pull them down the tube. I'm only a single storey house so not a real problem unless the ladder breaks or slips. Sad

Purchased a brush from one of the diy shops but it came with a short handle, about 3 years ago. Have had to bodge the pole/handle though. I do not recall which shop it came from but it was probably Alati.

I recommend a tot or two of anaesthetic before getting on the ladder, Mr Wolf - it also boosts one's confidence enormously.... Wink

Just read MW hasn't been a*** to sweep his chimne yet so I thought I'd just give him a warming comment. Before the summer heat HI purchased and burnt a chimney cleaning thingy purchased from Practika. It certainly made a differeence, the soot was sort of coagulated into cinders, thats the best I can describe it. Not only did I seem to get the chinmey cleaner but there was very little dusty soot all over the place. I will definitly do the same next year.

I had an old local man clean mine - clambered over the roof like a monkey. He used a brush with a large weight attached on a long peice of rope. Dropped that down the chimney and pulled it up and down a few times. Seemed to work as loads of soot came down and got cleaned out.

I'm not quite understanding this - something that BURNS the chimney clean? Could I get clarification or otherwise of my understanding and if possible a product name, photograph, better description of how it works etc. Anything that makes my beer drinking easier must be considered when having to do jobs that I don't really look forward to doing and with my weight, I might well break a roof tile or two which then has the Domino effect. It's like a small log containing various chemicals that "clean" your chimney, Mr Wolf:

THIS kind of thing...

I tried them a few times in France and they did F* All but some folk swear by them - however insurance companies emphatically do NOT....

These chimney cleaning logs do not diminish the task I'm afraid MW but they do make sweeping a little easier and more effective and I'm sure Sashi would appreciate an operation that does not mess the house up.
Unfortunatly I've discarded the packaging but Seedy's link depicts enough.

Another way is to let the fire die out. Then take a cat and put it in the stove. The only way out is for it to climb up the chimney. That dislodges a certain amount of soot, as you will readily imagine.

Probably yes, especially if you could get it to reverse up!
