I posted this here, not because I see it as clean energy, but more the possibility exists of these explorations going awry against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea.

China has already demonstrated its utilisation of brown coal from North Korea and India in order to spur its industrial development, resulting in significant CO2 and sulphur contamination of the environment. Many Chinese city dwellers have also experienced the general disregard for environmental protection. The potential of accidental methane releases affecting the atmosphere and in particular harming the ozone layer on a global scale, is the inherent risk of playing with Fiery Ice!

All energy sources have serious risks but should be explored responsibly. As greed is the primary driving factor the best hope is that the necessary research is not carried out by a country that does not answer to its people.
The biggest question is, who can be trusted.

To be honest, I don't trust any country to explore / exploit this energy source anymore than any other. Every entity whether state owned or private consortium, from BP to Exxon or Gazprom has managed to screw up the environment at some stage (some several times). However, I'm more concerned that the Chinese are exploring this in the particular area that has many geopolitical problems yet to unfold.

The Chinese are not famed for their gas exploration, but have been increasingly active in recent years learning overseas. It is this aspect that generates greater concern, since they're unlikely to contract out this type of work to the Japanese or the US that are more experienced in exploitation of the Fiery Ice.

Unfortunately the tensions currently escalating in the South China Sea, may lead to environmental pollution in the form of unintentional methane release if the Chinese 'blow a gasket'. It wouldn't be the first environmental disaster, but it might occur with no one the wiser, as the Chinese would hardly 'fess up' to any accidents.

The possibility of substantial methane release through drilling / exploration accidents adding to environmental warming is already a matter of concern. Considerable glacier retreat across the globe is already in evidence and permafrost in Arctic and Antarctic regions is receding at an alarming rate. Even the world's seed bank in coldstore is in jeopardy -
