Just got back from the house, where the new kitchen is almost finished Super A few finishing touches need to be done tomorrow, plus a good butt-kicking to be administered to the granite company, who don't think too much before they cut the darned stuff.... I hope we can move in before too much longer!

I thought it was time to have a post or two in this hitherto empty section, at least to avoid cluttering up the "What Ya Doing" thread Wink

And I'm Charley Brown Wink

Photos will be forthcoming - before & after if you're not careful Very Happy - luckily we have an apartment very close, so the move should be relatively painless if you ignore the 69 steps up to the front door. I'm not 100% sure I didn't booboo in the choice of such a dark kitchen - the room looked big when it was bare and newly plastered but seems to have shrunk somewhat. Sad

Paint the walls white, it'll make the room look bigger.

Oh yes, Seedy, before pics too! It will be like those decorating shows on TV. I like them to show the "before," and the "after." Just get bored with the bit in between.

What, no lift?

You must have chosen dark cabinets and dark granite countertops. Perhaps a coat of paint on your...oh never mind.

Nope - no elevator! Wink That was one of the things which concerned me about the house, since I have knackered knees after too many years of knee-knackering sports and the ensuing five knee ops, but actually it's proving okay for me, although the much younger OH keeps complaining about hers Very Happy Humping wood up over the winter may well sort out the men from the boys though....

Believe me, we're beyond bored with the in-between bit - it seems to have been going on for ever and the end seems nowhere in sight!

Dark cabinets - yes, but with a light granite (after lengthy negotiation with 'Er Indoors, who favoured "Technical Granite" - given the problem with Bulgarska Rabota on two of the exposed edges she might have been right, although Silstone etc just looks fake to me) The granite picks up the brown and cream in the floor tiles (and the brown of the units) and has flecks of gray, which in turn pick up the pale gray of the Fraganite sink.

The nice thing is that I can cook and just turn around to the sink almost without taking a step.

I think I made a tactical error by putting in ceiling fans, though: I like the rustic look of pans hanging from ceiling racks (which the OH hates) but they certainly don't mix with fans, so she's quietly smug Very Happy

The walls are indeed white, Tony, and the windows are "Golden Oak" upvc, with sills in the same granite as the worktops.

Yesterday was another of "those days": the kitchen fitter said he was ready to install the extractor but "where is the hole through the wall?" Of course, his boss said that he would make it but evidently didn't tell him before she mooched off to Vienna on holiday - cue Seedy, standing on a granite worktop and wielding his trusty Kango. Needless to say, Sparky had cunningly concealed a cable in the plasterwork exactly where the hole needed to be but luckily white cable is fairly noticeable against gray cement and red brick - especially if you're taking it gently because you're half expecting such an eventuality, this being Bulgaria Wink

A few "Before" pics will be appearing shortly, CG.

Sounds like you've opted for what HGTV (House and Garden Television) viewers know as a "Traditonal" look for your kitchen. I remember that you and the Mrs. where deciding on style; you preferred a more rustic look and she a more contemporary one.

I'm still enjoying the black-and-white-Shaker-style-units-and-pot-rack style I've had in my last 3 kitchens. Oh, and we've thrown bead board cladding up on one wall--to hide the ugly creasote stain on the chimney wall!

Looking forward to your piccies

A little off topic I know, but I had a week in Sofia very recently.

I have never rated the city but I must say I quite liked it this time. I normally stay close to the Lion Bridge for easy access to the airport. This time I stayed in a district close to the Parliament building. Some great bars and restaurants and a real buzz going on. Not sure if I could live there but will certainly have a few weeks to explore more when the weather picks up next year.

The centre wouldn't be my choice of residence but living on the slopes of Vitosha and being able to get into the centre quickly and easily is the best of both worlds for us. Smile

We walked part way up the Vitosha. Assuming we are talking about the same area I was very impressed. When you turn right to the Vitosha from the village (coming from Sofia) there is a restaurant about 20 minutes walk from the road. It's on the right of the path as you walk up. It was very busy and the food was excellent.
