Last question before this forum disappears, unless like Brexit it gets a forever extension, but does anyone know where you can purchase mason jars in Bulgaria to be used for pressure canning?

Thanks again for all your help in the past.

Ikea sell them (and spare seals) and I believe that I've seen them in Metro in the past Smile

Do bear in mind that not all Mason-type jars are tested/approved for pressure canning, as the physics of pressure canning is a little different to that of "normal preserving". I'd suspect that the Ikea ones would be fine but there's no mention of any warranty.

Also, the jars in Ikea are those loosely called "Mason" in Europe, ie with the clamp-on lids rather than the two-part screw-on ones. Metro, and the big DIY sheds, certainly sell the jars with one-part screw-on lids, as used for lutenitsa etc. Lidl also sell them but I think you may have missed them there by a couple of weeks...

We do water bath preserving/pickling etc at present so have loads of screw cap lids etc but as we have improved on the self sufficiency side of things we now have three freezers full of meat/veg/fruit so are looking at other ways of preserving. We will have to order a pressure canner from the good old USA and would prefer the two part lids you find on "real" mason jars to use in conjunction with it.

Thanks again Smile

A trawl though BG sites turns up tips on how to turn a real mason jar (масонски буркан) into a decorative (allegedly Wink ) item but there doesn't appear to be anywhere here that actually supplies them...

However, you don't need to buy a canner from the US - Hawkins Big Boy Cooker/Canner

Glad it was not just my lack of computer skills that could not find a supplier of the jars here Smile

Looked at the "Big Boy" previously but a proper pressure canner from the States actually costs less even with delivery!

Thanks for looking and helping.

The Big Boys are actually very popular as pressure canners in the US Wink Did you factor in the VAT and duty when you did your sums _ not to mention the Buggeration Factor of dealing with BG Customs?
