Definitely not in the tourist areas but after that it depends on what you're looking for in terms of scenery/amenities/entertainment etc, not to mention whether you want to be in a Brit enclave or surrounded by Bulgarian villagers/city-slickers. There's also the question of what sort of property and how much you have to spend... Cool

Welcome to the forum.

I avoid the tourist spots like the plague! I am in a country village and am extremely happy here, but it wouldn't appeal to everyone.

Adding to the above as Seedy said, you need to decide which type of environment and what facilities you want close at hand, also with the uncertainty of Brexit if you are planning to move soon it may be advisable to rent first, this will firstly allow you to explore an area to see if it meets your requirements, secondly allow time to find out what changes will be brought in to the current rules and regulations regarding residency and property ownership and thirdly be in a position to purchase when/if the panic selling gathers pace. That said I hope you find what you are looking for.

You were here 5 years ago! Not much will have changed in the villages since that time. Start by looking at some Estate Agent's adverts as there are many renovated houses left by Expats going for real bargains. Based on your criteria and knowing of only one such Agency in my part of Bulgaria then, I would suggest Bulgarian Real Estate (BRE) in Yambol. run by a British couple who have been here 10+ years at least. I am not recommending them nor am I saying that they're bad, I'm just saying that they have a decent database of reasonably priced renovated properties on their books that could well suit the criteria you wish for:-

No problem, but did you see anything interesting, are some of the houses matching the criteria that you're seeking?

Weirdly and depending on Brexit Bulgaria may be my port of call rather than Spain now as you all seemed to manage it before they became a member of the EU. I’ll wait and see how this disaster goes . Hopefully another Referendum.

My own criteria has been to be no further away from an International Airport than 1-2 hours driving, no further away from a Town no more than 30 minutes driving and a City no further away than 1 hour driving or, by train, bus.

I do not have a bar, cafe, school, doctor or anything of that kind in my small village, but know there is a small Hospital in my nearest Town some 20 minutes drive away and my English speaking GP is 45 minutes drive away.

Central Bulgaria would put you somewhere around Stara Zagora going on down to Plovdiv and beyond - South West is not an area that I know about at all. We had one very active poster from down that area, Bulgarianlily, but unfortunately, she hasn't posted for a long time albeit, you might be able to find her Blog somewhere with luck and Google Search.

I'd say that Chateau Seedy fulfils all of your criteria, Mr Wolf.... Wink

I'd say that - depending on the OP's age and/or desire to live "The Good Life" by growing their own food (while knackering their backs) - the best option is to buy a small apartment in one of the cities, so that all facilities are within handy reach. "Small is best" because it also keep the Friends'n'Family Freeloaders from descending on you every time they feel like a cheap holiday. Wink

Of course, Brexit might well put the kibosh on that anyway if OAPs' form S1 is suddenly no longer valid (see the Brexit News thread). The rates for medical insurance for Old Crocks is no laughing matter and you'll get flipped the finger by the NHS and the BG government if you try to keep up the illegal "foot in each camp" routine.... Cool
